Air New Zealand announced on Apr. 15 that its new Economy Skynest sleep pods will be available for booking from May 2026, with service beginning in November of the same year. The airline said the innovation is designed to improve comfort for passengers on some of the world’s longest commercial flights.

The introduction of Skynest is significant for travellers journeying to and from New Zealand, a country known for its remote location. Long-haul travel can be challenging, and Air New Zealand’s new offering aims to make these journeys more manageable by providing passengers in Economy and Premium Economy cabins with access to lie-flat sleeping pods.

Chief Executive Nikhil Ravishankar said, “For a country as remote as New Zealand, the journey matters. Tourism is a $46 billion NZD industry, but growth depends on travellers’ willingness to spend long hours in the air to get here.” Ravishankar added, “Skynest is designed to help make that easier. It reflects the practical innovation New Zealand is known for, and shows how thoughtful design can improve the travel experience. By giving more people the chance to properly rest on ultra long-haul flights, it helps make travel to and from New Zealand more manageable.”

Each Skynest pod offers a full-length mattress with fresh bedding changed between sessions, privacy curtains, ambient lighting intended for rest and waking up gradually, personal storage space with charging ports (USB-A and USB-C), reading lights, ventilation outlets, a crew call button with an in-pod seatbelt, and an amenities kit including eye mask and skincare products. Customers booking Economy or Premium Economy seats may add a four-hour session in one of six bunk-style pods located between those cabins aboard Boeing 787-9 aircraft; two sessions per flight will be offered initially at prices starting from $495 NZD per session.

Ravishankar said this development builds upon previous innovations such as Skycouch: “Skycouch gave customers more choice in how they travel, and Skynest builds on that by offering a new option for rest on our longest flights… It is about recognising that customers value flexibility, comfort and control.” Air New Zealand manages a fleet of 115 aircraft averaging just over ten years old according to its official website.

The airline provides passenger services across domestic locations within New Zealand as well as international destinations throughout Australia, Pacific Islands, Asia and North America according to its official website. Global connections are further extended through partnerships with other airlines according to Air New Zealand.

Operating within the aviation sector as stated by Air New Zealand, this latest move demonstrates continued efforts toward improving passenger experience during lengthy journeys.
