BermudAir is experiencing stronger performance on its Canadian routes, with more Canadian travelers choosing destinations outside the United States, according to an April 3 report. Founder and CEO Adam Scott said this trend is providing the airline with new opportunities as it focuses on refining its route network and expanding its fleet.
The shift in travel preferences among Canadians is significant for BermudAir, which launched in September 2023 to improve connectivity between Bermuda and key North American markets. As Scott explained, “Our more established routes, particularly in Canada, are performing really strongly.” The airline now operates six weekly flights to Toronto Pearson International Airport during the summer season and has added twice-weekly flights to Montréal–Trudeau International Airport and Halifax Stanfield International Airport.
Scott attributed part of this success to a broader trend: “We’ve seen more Canadian travelers choosing vacation destinations outside the US, which has greatly benefited Bermuda and the broader Caribbean region.” Statistics Canada data shows that return trips by Canadians to the United States fell by 22% early this year compared to similar periods last year. At the same time, Caribbean destinations have reported up to a 50% increase in Canadian tourists year-over-year.
In addition to focusing on Canada, BermudAir is reshaping its New York-area service by consolidating operations at Newark Liberty International Airport while suspending flights from LaGuardia Airport due to slot constraints. “LaGuardia’s slot constraints limit our ability to grow… optimizing schedules through Newark allows us to better serve our customers,” Scott said.
The airline’s winter seasonal service from Anguilla has also performed well. According to Scott, “Based on this success, we’re planning to expand service to Anguilla,” indicating potential future growth into other island destinations.
Fleet adjustments are underway as BermudAir transitions toward an all-Embraer E190 fleet for increased capacity and range. Looking ahead, Scott expressed ambitions for transatlantic flights but noted that larger aircraft would be needed: “One of our ambitions is to fly east… we will need bigger, more capable aircraft.”
BermudAir differentiates itself with a focus on “authentic Bermudian hospitality” onboard—offering complimentary beverages and local snacks—to create a premium leisure experience for passengers. This approach aims at setting it apart from larger competitors like Air Canada or JetBlue.
