By the end of 2024, Boeing had received around 2,000 orders for the Dreamliner family, with the majority being for the 787-9 model. Out of these orders, nearly two-thirds of the delivered aircraft are powered by General Electric’s engines.
General Electric’s GEnx engine is favored by many airlines due to its widespread use in two-thirds of all operational Dreamliners. GE Aerospace is one of America’s leading producers of advanced commercial turbofan engines alongside Pratt & Whitney.
The Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engine first ran in 2006 but faced challenges when a corrosion-related issue was discovered in intermediate-pressure turbine blades in 2016. This led to grounding several aircraft and incurred significant costs for repairs. Despite this setback, Rolls-Royce highlights that “the Trent 1000 powered Boeing 787 Dreamliner is 20% more efficient than the Boeing 767 aircraft it replaces.”
In recent years, General Electric has secured more orders compared to Rolls-Royce for their respective engines used on new Dreamliners. From pre-2016 to post-2016 order statistics reveal a shift towards favoring GE’s GEnx engines.
