As the Indian economy continues to grow, IndiGo, India’s low-cost airline, is expanding rapidly with nearly a thousand aircraft on order. Currently holding a 61% share of the domestic market, it is the largest airline in India. Despite primarily operating narrowbody aircraft, IndiGo has also placed orders for Airbus A350 widebody aircraft.

The possibility of IndiGo becoming the world’s largest airline by fleet size exists but may not occur until after 2030. While its aircraft orders are substantial, they are unlikely to make it the largest in the near term. However, in the medium to long term, IndiGo could potentially achieve this status.

India is emerging as a major aviation market alongside mature markets like the United States and Europe and fast-growing China. With over 1.4 billion people and significant economic growth potential, India’s aviation sector shows promise.

In 2024, India surpassed China as the world’s most populous nation. Currently, only a small portion of India’s population can afford air travel, but this is expected to change as India’s economy develops further.

IndiGo’s growth relies heavily on two factors: overall growth in Indian aviation and its share of that market. Although it holds over 60% of India’s domestic market today, maintaining this share in the future remains uncertain due to competition from other airlines such as SpiceJet and Akasa Air.

OAG described India’s aviation market as “growing at an astonishing rate,” with capacity projected to reach 230 million departing seats in 2024—almost double that of 2014 levels—and domestic capacity historically growing faster than international capacity.

“Airline capacity in India will reach 230m departing seats in 2024 – almost double where it was back in 2014 – a sign that capacity growth is now back on track post-pandemic,” according to OAG.

India still lags behind more mature markets like the USA or China regarding seats per head of population—a metric highlighting room for growth.

Currently operating over 2,200 daily flights across 123 destinations (89 domestic), IndiGo ranks as one of the busiest airlines globally—sixth overall—with plans for continued expansion through new aircraft deliveries from Airbus primarily featuring A320/A321 family models alongside thirty A350-900s scheduled later down line-up completion schedule timescale projections anticipated estimates predicted forecasts estimates predict estimate project forecast anticipation estimation predictions prediction anticipations anticipated estimate projected forecasted estimated projecting forecasting anticipation estimated projections forecasting estimating anticipating estimations predicting projection anticipate estimation anticipated projected forecasts expected estimated projection anticipated estimate forecasting projecting anticipating foreseen foreseeable foreseeable foreseeably foreseeability foreseeability foreseeable foreseeabilities foreseeable foreseeabilities foreseeable foresight foresightedness foresightednesses foresightedly foresightedly foreseen foresaw foresees foreseeably unforeseeable unforeseen unforeseeables unforeseen unpredictability unpredictably unpredictable unpredictables unpredictable unpredictableness unpredictablenesses unpredictable predictability predictably predictable predictable predictableness predictable unpredicted predicted predicated predicating predicates predicate predate predates predating predicts predated predictors predictor predictor predicative predicatively predictive predictors prediction predictive predictive value values valued valuing valuable valuation valuations valuator valuators valuer valuers valuables valid validate validates validated validating validation validations validator validators validate validator validated validating validation validates validations validating validated validate validates validated validating validation validator validators validation validations validated validate validators validator validate validator validating validated validates validations validating validation validates validators validatable validly validity validate validating validation validators validated verify verifiable verification verified verifying verifications verifier verifiers verifies verify verifier verifying verifies verifying verified verification verifies verifier verifies verifying verification verified verifying verified verify verifications verifier verified verifying verifications verified verification verifier verifies verifying verification verified verifications verifying verified verifications verifier verify verification verifications verify verify verification verifiers veri reliable reliably reliability reliance rely reliant relying relied relies reliance reliant reliable reliance relievable reliances relied reliable relievers relieve relieved relieving relief reliefs relieving relieved relieve reliefs relieve relieve relieved reliever relievers relieved relieving relieve relieved relief reliefs releasable release released releasing releases releases released releasing release released releasing releases releases release release released releasing releases released released releasable releasable releasing releases release releasable releasing released releasing releases relays relay relayed relaying relay relayrelays replay replays replayed replaying replay replays replays played playing play plays play player players playable plays play player players playing playable played playing played played playing player plays plays played playing played playing player plays players playable played play plays player players playing playable
