Dnata announced on March 31 that it has completed the integration of its Italian ground handling business into its global organization, with all activities now operating under the dnata brand. This step follows dnata’s full acquisition of its Italian subsidiary, previously known as Airport Handling, after a period of gradually increasing its shareholding.
The integration is significant for Italy’s aviation sector, marking dnata’s strengthened commitment to the market and expanding operations in key cities such as Rome and Milan. In 2025, Airport Handling began operations at Rome Fiumicino Airport, nearly doubling dnata’s presence across Italy beyond Milan Malpensa and Linate airports. The company also recently announced a €25 million investment in a new cargo facility at Malpensa Airport to increase capacity and support growth in logistics.
“This milestone reflects our long-term confidence in the Italian aviation sector,” said Clive Sauvé-Hopkins, dnata’s CEO – Airport Operations. “From our beginnings in Dubai to our growing presence across Europe, dnata has consistently focused on delivering globally aligned services while maintaining a strong local approach. As demand continues to rise, we are investing in capacity, technology and talent to remain a trusted partner to airlines operating in Milan, Rome and beyond.”
Dnata first entered Italy through an investment in Airport Handling S.p.A., eventually reaching full ownership by 2025. The completed integration brings Italy more closely into dnata’s network with global systems and operational processes. Dnata now supports about 150,000 flights annually for over 60 airline customers within Italy. Its Catering & Retail division produces more than seven million meals each year at eleven airports nationwide.
As one of Europe’s largest operations for the company, dnata employs over 5,000 people locally; upcoming projects like the new Milan cargo facility are expected to add more than 150 jobs. Dnata has earned accolades such as Ground Handler of the Year from Air Cargo News and World’s Leading Air Travel Service Provider from the World Travel Awards, according to the official website.
Globally founded in Dubai in 1959, dnata operates at more than 120 airports worldwide with over 51,000 staff members collaborating with hundreds of airlines according to its official website. The company partners with numerous airlines and airports across six continents as reported by its official site, providing integrated services including aviation ground handling, cargo management, travel solutions and catering.
Dnata functions as a structured global entity led by an international team adhering to industry standards as noted on its website. Recent investments have expanded advanced cargo infrastructure not only in Italy but also major hubs like Amsterdam and Zurich.
Italy is now seen as a strategic pillar within dnata’s international expansion plans—demonstrating ongoing efforts toward service consistency across Europe’s key gateways.
