Emirates has launched its first Airbus A350 service to Adelaide, marking a significant development in the airline’s Australian operations. The new aircraft, which began operating on December 1, 2025, introduces Emirates’ Premium Economy cabin to Adelaide and completes the rollout of this product across all five Australian cities served by the carrier.
The arrival of the A350-900ULR makes Adelaide the first city in Emirates’ global network to receive this ultra-long-range model. The aircraft replaces the Boeing 777-200LR on flights EK440/441 between Dubai and Adelaide. According to Emirates, 56 out of its 70 weekly services between Australia and Dubai are now operated by next-generation aircraft, offering over 5,000 Premium Economy seats each week.
Barry Brown, Divisional Vice President Australasia at Emirates, said: “This is a landmark moment for Emirates, highlighting Adelaide and South Australia’s vital role in our global operations. Adelaide proudly becomes the first Australian city to welcome the Emirates A350. With this, our new and highly acclaimed Premium Economy cabin debuts in Adelaide, completing the cabin’s rollout across all five of Emirates’ Australian gateways.
“While Emirates has been accepting the delivery of A350s for the past year, this is the first delivery of our long-range variant with the range and capability to fly from Dubai to Adelaide. Adelaide has been earmarked to receive this new aircraft for some time, underscoring our commitment to the South Australian capital.
“These milestones are a powerful statement of our ongoing investment and commitment to bringing our latest generation product to Australia and will provide South Australians with direct access to our most advanced, comfortable seats and an elevated flying experience, offering seamless connections to Europe and beyond for both business and leisure. Premium Economy has proven incredibly popular, consistently achieving strong load factors to and from Australia, and we anticipate a similar strong demand in Adelaide for the cabin’s quiet luxury and customised experience.”
South Australian Minister for Tourism Zoe Bettison welcomed the development: “The arrival of Emirates new ultra-long-range A350 into Adelaide is another major aviation development for tourism in South Australia. It makes this flight even more attractive to potential visitors from key global markets, further boosting the more than $62 million that the Emirates’ daily direct non-stop flights generate in tourism expenditure in South Australia each year. It is exciting that Adelaide has been the city chosen by Emirates to debut its new A350 aircraft and demonstrates the airline’s commitment to South Australia and its confidence in tourism and trade in our State.”
Brenton Cox, Managing Director at Adelaide Airport added: “These new longer range aircraft are a game changer for Adelaide because of their size and range, which are perfectly suited to our market. Emirates has been a strong supporter of ours for more than a decade and this is another show of support for South Australian travellers and visitors to our State. The brand new Airbus A350-900ULR is state-of-the-art and offers the latest in technology and comfort as well as offering more seats, and more cabin choice. The introduction of Premium Economy seats is similarly a significant win for our customers.”
The Airbus A350-900ULR can operate non-stop flights up to 15 hours with a range exceeding 14,000 km while being one of most fuel-efficient widebody jets currently available commercially.
Onboard features include three cabins accommodating up to 298 passengers—32 Business Class seats with lie-flat beds inspired by Mercedes S Class design; 28 Premium Economy seats featuring enhanced comfort elements such as adjustable headrests; plus 238 Economy Class seats with updated amenities like six-way adjustable headrests.
Passengers also have access onboard technology upgrades such as wireless charging (Business Class), advanced inflight entertainment systems with touchscreen controls across all classes—including options like skipping credits or intros—and improved Wi-Fi connectivity via ViaSat’s Global Xpress satellite network.
Premium Economy travelers benefit from priority boarding at Dubai International Airport along with dedicated check-in facilities there; they also enjoy increased baggage allowance up to 35kg per passenger along with enhanced dining experiences using Royal Doulton china tableware.
Each daily flight offers cargo capacity totaling approximately 16 tonnes per trip or about 224 tonnes weekly between Dubai-Adelaide routes—a channel supporting exports such as wine products; seafood including fish/mussels; chilled meats; fresh produce; flowers; pharmaceuticals/cosmetics/fashion garments—with freight exports valued around $98 million annually according to estimates provided by the airline itself.
Including both freight export value ($98 million) plus associated tourism spending generated through these services ($62 million), total annual economic impact attributed directly or indirectly through these flights reaches approximately $160 million per year.
Emirates continues operating extensive services throughout Australia—maintaining seventy weekly return flights connecting Melbourne/Sydney/Brisbane/Perth/Adelaide directly back-and-forth from Dubai—and recently introduced retrofitted four-class A380s into Perth featuring Premium Economy offerings on west coast routes as well.
The company states it remains committed not only through air travel but also via sponsorship investments exceeding $230 million across sporting events like the Australian Open or cultural partnerships including those involving Sydney Symphony Orchestra among others.
