Emirates is making strides in accessible travel initiatives as part of its operational strategy. “Emirates has been driving and facilitating good progress in accessible travel, and it is part of our operational strategy,” stated Adel al Redha, Deputy President and COO of Emirates. The airline became a Certified Autism Center at the beginning of 2024, providing training to 30,000 frontline staff and cabin crew to support customers with autism.
Emirates is launching the Travel Rehearsal programme in 17 cities, including Barcelona, Brisbane, and Dubai, among others, with additional destinations joining monthly. This programme started in 2023 as a community effort with local organizations and authorities in Dubai, where they collaborated with various schools and autism centers. Attendees participated in simulated airport experiences to familiarize themselves with the travel process.
On an international scale, the programme has been beneficial, with parents and educators reporting positive outcomes, as it helps children prepare for travel with trained staff providing support. Although not a bookable service, the travel rehearsal initiative involves partnerships with airports and autism centers and is offered on an invitation basis.
Emirates is now the world’s first Autism Certified Airline, having trained its workforce in autism awareness with a focus on understanding and supporting the needs of autistic and sensory-sensitive travelers. This certification is awarded by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES), which collaborated with Emirates for over a year.
Throughout April, Emirates used its inflight entertainment system to promote autism awareness, showcasing movies, podcasts, and documentaries related to autism. The initiatives align with Dubai’s goal to become the most accessible travel destination, addressing concerns from families about traveling. Emirates’ ongoing efforts in accessible travel involve working with local entities in Dubai to enhance inclusivity in air travel.
