Etihad Airways has announced an order for 32 new Airbus widebody aircraft, with deliveries scheduled to begin in 2027. This move is part of the airline’s strategy to expand its next-generation, fuel-efficient fleet.
According to Etihad Airways, this latest fleet order represents one of its most significant expansions in recent years. The acquisition includes Airbus A330neo, A350F, and additional A350-1000 aircraft. This aligns with Etihad’s ambition to support Abu Dhabi’s development as a leading global aviation and logistics hub. The milestone also highlights the airline’s recovery and growth trajectory following restructuring efforts and a renewed focus on operational efficiency and environmental performance.
Etihad’s fleet renewal plan, detailed in its 2024 Annual Report, aims to reduce carbon emissions per seat by 25% by 2030 through the introduction of next-generation aircraft. The airline currently operates a fleet of over 80 aircraft, including Boeing 787 Dreamliners and Airbus A350-1000s, known for their fuel efficiency and lower environmental impact. The addition of these new Airbus widebodies will expand capacity on long-haul routes while reducing average fleet age and maintenance costs.
Airbus data indicates that the A330neo delivers up to 25% better fuel efficiency than earlier models. Meanwhile, the A350F—Airbus’s new-generation freighter—reduces fuel consumption and COâ‚‚ emissions by up to 40% compared to previous cargo aircraft. These models also support improved payload capabilities and lower operating costs, helping airlines meet the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) environmental standards.
