Federal Express Corporation has partnered with The Salvation Army to launch a community care and environmental upcycling project in Hong Kong. The initiative involved transforming discarded wooden pallets donated by FedEx into 15 multi-purpose cabinets, which were distributed to low-income families before Chinese New Year.
Professional craftsmen designed the cabinets to serve as bookshelves, coffee tables, or storage racks. According to one recipient family, “They help us effectively organize household clutter, and both my child and I love them.” The new furniture contributed to a neater and more comfortable home environment.
FedEx provided the raw materials and organized local volunteer teams for assembly and delivery. Anthony Leung, managing director of FedEx Hong Kong and Macau, said, “Through this collaboration with The Salvation Army to upcycle discarded wooden pallets, we are giving transportation materials a second life, reducing waste while supporting the community in a truly meaningful way.” He added that the project aligns with FedEx’s ongoing commitment to community care and sustainable development in Hong Kong.
Major Glenn Price, Secretary for Business Administration of The Salvation Army, noted the importance of addressing limited storage space for low-income families: “To address this critical issue, we collaborated with community allies to meet these needs. The successful implementation of this programme has been made possible through the generous support of FedEx. Beyond their practical utility, these wooden cabinets are filled with heartfelt care. Through this small yet meaningful change, the quality of life for beneficiary families is significantly enhanced, making their homes more comfortable and pleasant.”
FedEx set a goal in 2021 to achieve carbon-neutral operations globally by 2040. The company continues to promote sustainability by using reusable or recyclable materials and digitizing processes to lower emissions. To further support Hong Kong’s carbon-neutral vision, FedEx has started electrifying its fleet for last-mile delivery services.
FedEx also participates in corporate social responsibility efforts such as tree-planting events, beach cleanups, and uniform upcycling projects alongside local non-profits. Last year, FedEx received several business recognitions for its community contributions including logo recognition under the Caring Company Scheme by the Hong Kong Council of Social Service and an SDG Corporate Award from Fair Trade Hong Kong Foundation.
