FedEx to transport nearly one million kilos of flowers for Valentine’s Day

Federal Express Corporation, conocida como FedEx, anunció sus planes para transportar cerca de 800,000 kilos de flores desde Colombia y más de 290,000 kilos desde Ecuador durante febrero. Este esfuerzo se enmarca en la temporada de San Valentín, un período clave para la industria floricultora.

En 2024, las exportaciones del sector floricultor colombiano crecieron un 8.8%, con Estados Unidos como principal destino. Colombia destina el 95% de su producción a la exportación, siendo el segundo mayor exportador mundial con un 20% del mercado global. Las regiones de Cundinamarca y Antioquia concentran el 98% de las hectáreas cultivadas, destacándose variedades como rosas (19.1%), claveles y crisantemos. El sector genera más de 200,000 empleos rurales, ocupados en un 70% por mujeres.

Por su parte, Ecuador alcanzó aproximadamente $997 millones en exportaciones florícolas en 2024, también teniendo a Estados Unidos como principal mercado. El país es el tercer mayor exportador mundial con una participación del 10%. Las áreas cercanas a Quito concentran gran parte de las hectáreas cultivadas con variedades como rosas y claveles. La industria genera más de 53,000 empleos directos y busca duplicar sus exportaciones para alcanzar $2,000 millones para el año 2035.

Eduardo Garrido, Gerente Senior de Operaciones de Rampa de FedEx en Colombia y Ecuador comentó: “Cada año, el Día de San Valentín representa un desafío logístico único debido a la naturaleza perecedera de las flores y la necesidad de entregarlas con rapidez y cuidado. Nuestro equipo está trabajando incansablemente para garantizar que millones de flores lleguen de manera eficiente y segura alrededor de los Estados Unidos”.

FedEx ha fortalecido sus operaciones mediante una nueva ruta aérea directa entre Ecuador y Miami. Además, han implementado soluciones innovadoras como International Priority DirectDistribution (IPD), que ofrece entregas rápidas desde Bogotá y Medellín en Colombia y desde Quito en Ecuador.

San Valentín es una temporada crucial para la exportación floral desde Colombia y Ecuador. La eficiencia logística es esencial para asegurar que las flores lleguen rápidamente a los mercados internacionales manteniendo su calidad.
