Long Beach Airport is set to undergo a $37 million modernization of its passenger concourse, with the goal of improving the post-security experience for travelers ahead of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic and Paralympic Games. The Long Beach City Council approved the construction contract unanimously during its October 14, 2025 meeting.

Mayor Rex Richardson said, “Our award-winning Airport is one of the best in the nation, offering travelers a uniquely Long Beach experience. This project will not only enhance LGB’s indoor and outdoor passenger experience, it will create nearly 200 local construction jobs. As we plan to welcome the world for the 2028 Games, bold investments are being made to continue to ensure every visitor’s first impression reflects the hospitality of our City.”

The Passenger Concourse Enhancement Project will address infrastructure that was originally built in 2012. Planned improvements include changes to passenger circulation such as new queuing and seating layouts, upgrades to mechanical systems including air-conditioning and restrooms, additional electrical chargers at seats, an open-air garden area at the north concourse exterior, more signage and flight information displays, new flooring and gate podiums, a Service Animal Relief Area, and sustainability features like LED lighting.

Construction is expected to begin in late 2025 and finish by 2027. The airport does not anticipate any disruptions to commercial flights or gate access during this period.

Fifth District Councilwoman Megan Kerr stated, “This refresh is not just aesthetic — it’s about expanding LGB’s reputation as a premier airport that offers travelers an experience that is distinctly Long Beach. After more than a century of service, this project ensures LGB keeps soaring as one of Southern California’s most welcoming gateways.”

Fourth District Councilman Daryl Supernaw added: “For the 2028 Games and beyond, these concourse improvements highlight the City’s commitment to keep investing in Long Beach Airport’s future, ensuring it remains a modern, welcoming place for generations of travelers to come.”

Of the total $37 million cost for enhancements at Long Beach Airport’s passenger concourse—$24 million comes from Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) grants under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. The remainder will be paid through airport revenue without using local tax dollars. PCL Construction Services Inc. has been awarded a $28 million contract following a competitive process.

Congressman Robert Garcia said: “As the former Mayor of Long Beach, I know how valuable our airport is for our City’s economy and residents. This investment will modernize our Airport to make it more sustainable, safer and efficient for years to come. I’m eager to see how these upgrades will improve the travel experience for folks, support businesses and create good jobs for our community.”

Airport Director Cynthia Guidry commented: “We’re grateful to the FAA for this significant investment. This project ensures our award-winning indoor/outdoor concourse remains a premier travel destination and gateway to Southern California with enhanced passenger comfort, sustainability and operational efficiency.”

The enhancement project is projected to generate approximately 190 construction jobs locally. The broader Long Beach Airport Complex already contributes about $9 billion annually in economic output while supporting around 42,000 jobs across the region.

Long Beach Airport currently offers nonstop flights to 21 destinations along with connections via major airlines such as Southwest Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and Hawaiian Airlines.
