When your flight is canceled and you’re stranded overnight, the airline might offer a hotel room. This often depends on whether the delay is deemed their fault—such as mechanical issues or unavailable crew—or beyond their control, like weather or air traffic problems.

Receiving a room can involve long waits, reducing sleep time. Even airlines that provide rooms through their apps may lack availability at discounted rates. The quality of these rooms can also be questionable.

An American Airlines passenger reported being stuck overnight in Dallas due to a delay and was given a voucher for Motel 8. They described finding roaches on the ceiling and stained sheets with hair on the bed in two different rooms.

"@AmericanAir i was mistreated last week on your flight from Atlanta to Dallas and then from Dallas to Phoenix. Here are the videos of my room disgusting hair and stains on the bed in two different rooms," tweeted Bald William Dent (@bougiegentleman) on July 5, 2024.

Another passenger thought they missed out when others were given rooms at Wyndham but found similar issues there too.

"For your review. This is how much you value your customer experience when providing hotel accommodations," tweeted Nellz (@Nursenellz) on December 19, 2023.

"The elevators were non-functional so we had to use the stairs. The hallway stunk and as you can see there was a big open hole in the ceiling tile," Nellz added.

Jared Brown (@jaredb6061) shared his experience: "Hey @AmericanAir you delay my flight 2 hours, lie about the reason, make me miss my connection, put me in a dump of a hotel with worms and broken locks, and expect me to be ok with it? I’ll await your reply."

The Biden administration has pressured airlines to cover hotels and meals during delays caused by them but did not address hotel quality or meal coverage amounts. One passenger received only $12 for airport food from American Airlines.

This issue extends beyond U.S. airlines; Air Canada once sent strangers to share a room, while Hainan Airlines in China housed passengers in an S&M-themed hotel.

Passengers are advised to consider alternative arrangements if possible:

1. **Credit Card Coverage**: Use credit cards offering trip delay coverage to book your own accommodation.

2. **Distressed Passenger Rate**: Ask at baggage offices for special rates if credit card coverage isn't available.

3. **Use Points**: Redeem points for better-quality accommodations quickly than relying on airline provisions.

While airlines may offer free rooms during controllable delays, these options often come with significant drawbacks regarding comfort and convenience.
