American Airlines flight 3921 from Chicago O’Hare to Manchester, New Hampshire, diverted to Buffalo on Wednesday after a passenger urinated in the aisle of the Embraer E-170 aircraft operated by Envoy Air, a wholly-owned regional carrier.

Niagara Frontier Transit Authority Police responded to Buffalo Airport’s gate 2, where the plane eventually arrived. According to the criminal complaint, an officer boarded the aircraft and was informed by a flight attendant that the man “exposed himself and urinated on the flight.” The flight attendant identified the passenger, who was then placed in custody and removed from the aircraft. Another passenger seated in row 2 had taken photos of the incident and shared them with police.

At the police station, despite being Mirandized, the passenger submitted to an interview. He explained that he was flying from Portland to Chicago to Manchester and admitted to drinking several Jack and Cokes before his flight out of Portland, during his layover in Chicago, and again on the flight from Chicago to Manchester. He claimed he got up during the flight to use the restroom and was “flicking the bean” when he returned due to having a "medical urination problem."

The 25-year-old man was federally charged with indecent exposure under District of Columbia criminal code D.C. Code 22-1312. This statute states it is unlawful for a person in public to make an obscene or indecent exposure of their genitalia or anus.

This incident is not isolated; similar events have occurred on American Airlines flights previously. In March, a man urinated on a seatmate during an American Airlines flight to Delhi. In another case, an American Airlines passenger had to be informed there was a lavatory onboard after attempting to use his seat as one.
