Lou Wipotnik served as Navy during World War II | Official Website

Lou Wipotnik’s passion for aviation began at an early age, inspired by his uncle who served in the Navy during World War II. His first plane ride with his uncle left a lasting impression. “That got me hooked,” Lou said, recalling his initial experience with flying.

While still too young to pilot a plane himself, Lou dedicated time to building model planes and setting future goals. He commenced flight lessons at Sally's Flying School at PWK in May 1957 and completed his first solo flight that August. By 1968, Lou had become a flight instructor, sharing his enthusiasm for aviation with others.

Throughout his career, Lou has flown across the country as both a flight instructor and an aviation enthusiast. Professionally, he spent over 30 years with Japan Airlines in their sales team. Over the past 64 years of flying and instructing, Lou has received numerous accolades including the Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award for over 50 years of accident-free flying and the FAA Gold Seal Flight Instructor recognition.

Although retired from active flying, Lou continues to impart his knowledge as a classroom flight instructor at Leading Edge Flying Club at CEA and other facilities in Illinois and Wisconsin. He remains committed to teaching new generations of hobbyists and professional pilots about safe flying practices.

“I’ve instructed a lot of people, including some who have become airline pilots and a gentleman who retired from UPS as a captain of a 747,” Lou noted. “It’s really fun to watch those people go up and get their various certifications and move on with major airlines.”

Despite his busy schedule, Lou finds time to contribute to the community through programs like Young Eagles at CEA, which introduces children to the joy of flight. In 2023, he was recognized for having flown more than 300 children through this program.

In October 2023, Lou participated in an Honor Flight where over 300 veterans traveled from Milwaukee to Washington D.C., spending the day visiting national memorials among fellow veterans. “The way they treated the veterans was remarkable," he said. "It was a great experience, and I would advise any veteran to participate and encourage anyone to volunteer with this amazing organization.”

Lou plans to continue serving as a flight instructor at CEA while also volunteering alongside his wife at upcoming Young Eagles events. Despite retirement from piloting aircraft himself, he remains actively involved in the aviation community through ongoing volunteer work and instruction.
