Washington’s National Airport is set to welcome an American Express Centurion Lounge, according to photos indicating that construction is nearly complete and furnishings are in place. Reports suggest an “early August” opening, although exact dates remain tentative. Observers noted that “there’s even art up on the walls” and someone was seen “walking around inside taking a video.”

The Centurion Lounge, which has been over three years in the making, was initially slated for a late 2022 opening. However, it faced delays until progress was reported last fall with an expected early 2024 launch. The lounge will cover 11,500 square feet and offer standard amenities such as food, beverages, and shower suites. It will also feature floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking airport operations.

The inclusion of showers in the lounge is notable given the legal restrictions limiting flights over 1,250 miles to and from the airport. Additionally, due to the absence of a customs facility at National Airport, international routes are restricted to airports with U.S. immigration preclearance.

National Airport is poised to become one of the premier airports in the country for lounges. Currently available lounges include:

- Three American Airlines Admirals Clubs

- Delta Sky Club

- United Club

- Priority Pass restaurant (American Tap Room)

- USO Lounge

Despite these additions, National Airport may still lag behind Denver and LAX in terms of lounge offerings.

In addition to the American Express Centurion Lounge, a Capital One lounge is also nearing completion. Both lounges were discussed by the airport authority as arriving in the second quarter of this year.

Capital One announced in fall 2022 a new dining-focused lounge concept for Washington’s National Airport (DCA) and New York LaGuardia (LGA) in collaboration with Jose Andres Group. The DC location will occupy a former restaurant space covering 5,483 square feet post-security at Concourse D's entrance.

Virginia passed emergency legislation last year allowing financial institutions and their subsidiaries or contractors to obtain mixed-beverage carrier licenses to facilitate these new lounges.
