Aerospace engineers and entrepreneurs Rob and Daniella Sladen questioned the necessity of complex lubrication systems for engines with short operational durations. Their work on small engines for one-time use drones led to the development of a modular oil pod, similar to a laundry detergent pod, that self-activates to distribute liquid within the system.

The ZPod from Zulu Pods introduces a novel approach to fluid delivery for critical mechanical applications. It combines the functions of a reservoir, pump, and nozzle into a single self-contained unit. The ZPod's patented design meters the exact amount of fluid needed for optimal performance, resulting in a compact and lightweight system.

In May 2024, Zulu Pods successfully demonstrated the ZPod on an engine test stand, achieving an important product development milestone. Currently, the US military is evaluating ZPods for use as primary and backup lubrication systems. For primary applications, ZPods replace traditional lubrication systems on jet engines powering UAVs and missiles, enhancing performance by increasing range. As backup systems, they provide emergency oil circulation independent of the main oil pump, allowing pilots to perform evasive maneuvers safely during lubrication loss incidents. Later this year, customer engine testing with several OEMs is planned as part of the path towards commercialization.

Zulu Pods is also developing corrosion protection pods based on its patented technology. The Anti-Corrosion ZPod delivers anti-corrosion fluids at customizable intervals for long-term storage or short-term protection during overhauls. This technology will be demonstrated at the 2025 MRO Americas trade show in Atlanta.

According to marketing manager Tyrone Fitzgerald, the Anti-Corrosion Pod offers significant labor and cost savings through data monitoring of ambient conditions and analytics such as system failure thresholds and operating trends. These features aim to equip maintainers with valuable knowledge to prevent downtime and mechanical failures.
