AI Airport Services Limited, a ground handling service provider, faced chaos at a recent Mumbai recruitment event, with 25,000 jobseekers for just over 2,000 positions. Most of the aspirants were first-time jobseekers. Recruiters were overwhelmed by the response and had to ask applicants to leave their resumes and return home.

The event was held at Mumbai's Kalina on July 16, where AI Airport Services Limited hosted walk-in interviews for 2,216 jobs. The ground service provider is seeking candidates for handyman positions that involve various repair and maintenance tasks. The job requires candidates with good physical strength and a willingness to take on rigorous work.

One of the biggest draws was the salary offered for the role, ranging from Rs 20,000 to 25,000 ($240 – $300) a month. With overtime allowances considered, the figure could reach up to Rs 30,000 ($360).

According to reports, almost all candidates were looking for their first job and most were fresh out of school after completing their secondary education.

As recruiters usually expect a high turnout for such events, it seems they were not prepared to host the 25,000 people who showed up at gate no. 5 at the Sahar cargo complex on Tuesday. As the crowd began to swell, a stampede-like situation emerged.

To prevent further escalation, recruiters asked applicants to leave their resumes and return home. They promised that all applications would be reviewed and selected candidates would be informed about the next round. George Abram, general secretary of the Aviation Industry Employees Guild criticized the process: “People came for thousands of vacancies. They brought demand drafts but we told them not to pay anything yet and that they would be called in later.”

It is not unusual for aviation-related companies to receive high volumes of applications for various positions in their organizations. In 2022, Air India received more than 75,000 applications within two months of posting job opportunities for cockpit and cabin roles.

Of those applications at Air India in 2022, over 1,700 were for pilots while the rest were for cabin crew positions as part of its major fleet and network renewal program under Tata Group’s management.
