The United Nations (UN) has called for justice for the victims of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17, ten years after the incident. An independent investigation committee determined that the anti-aircraft missile system responsible for downing the aircraft originated from Russia. Four defendants were tried in absentia for their involvement, with three found guilty.

On July 16, UN Secretary-General António Guterres urged all UN member states, including Russia, to fully cooperate and ensure accountability for those responsible. The UN Security Council had adopted resolution 2166 on July 21, 2014, expressing concerns over impediments faced by investigators at the crash site and calling for an independent international investigation.

The Joint Investigation Team (JIT), led by Dutch nationals and joined by Australian, Malaysian, Belgian, and Ukrainian investigators, concluded that the Buk anti-aircraft missile system came from Russia. Fred Westerbeke, then-Chief Public Prosecutor of the National Public Prosecution Service in the Netherlands, stated in May 2018 that the missile was fired from a field near Pervomaiskyi in Ukraine.

Despite these findings, Russia has denied involvement in the crash. The latest UN statement emphasized this denial and noted that there was insufficient evidence to conclusively blame Russia or its citizens.

In November 2022, the District Court in The Hague ruled three defendants guilty while acquitting a fourth. However, due to ongoing conflict between Ukraine and pro-Russian separatists at that time and subsequent events such as Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, these individuals were tried in absentia.

The tragedy occurred on July 16 when Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777-200ER operating flight MH17 was shot down over an active conflict zone between Ukraine and pro-Russia separatists. All 298 people onboard perished.
