To help address the critical shortage in the state's aviation maintenance workforce, the University of Maine’s Augusta campus has launched the state’s first aviation maintenance technician program. The program is based at the Brunswick Landing aviation campus.
One key factor in establishing this program was a report from medevac operator LifeFlight of Maine, which informed the university that it had spent a year attempting to recruit just one maintenance technician.
Daniel Leclair, director of the university's program, commented, “There’s a feeling that without more aviation technicians, that aviation business in the State of Maine is very much stifled.” He also noted that an aviation business relocated to Maine after learning about the new program and plans to hire its graduates.
