On a recent trip across Australia, maritime historian and travel writer Chris Frame, who stands nearly two meters tall, tested the comfort of flying with Jetstar. Known for its budget-friendly fares, Jetstar was chosen due to its significantly lower prices compared to Qantas or Virgin Australia.

Frame's main concern was whether he could find a comfortable seat on Jetstar's A321NEO aircraft, given the standard seat pitch of 73.7 cm (29 inches) and width of 45.7 cm (18 inches). His priority was securing extra legroom and flexibility in booking.

"I hadn’t flown Jetstar for over a decade and had no real expectations of how the booking process worked," Frame noted. He found the website straightforward and opted for the Flex Plus fare, which offered seating flexibility and Qantas Frequent Flyer points.

Upon booking, Frame selected seat 29A, an exit row window seat that promised ample legroom. "This seat offers some of the most generous economy legroom in Australian skies," he observed.

Qantas Frequent Flyer members with gold status or above can access Qantas lounges when flying on Jetstar. Frame utilized this benefit before boarding via aft airstairs where he received a lackluster welcome from the flight attendant juggling multiple duties.

The proximity of his seat to the exit door meant it lacked a window view but provided substantial legroom due to fewer seats in front. The A321NEO features USB-A charging ports; however, none were available at exit rows like 29A.

Jetstar offers an inflight entertainment streaming service known as Jetstar Entertainment +, which was non-functional during Frame’s flight. Despite this setback and minor turbulence causing delays, Flight Attendant Alan provided exceptional service throughout the journey.

"Alan made personalized conversation in a friendly and engaging manner," said Frame. Meals were buy-on-board with his bundled ticket covering modest refreshments.

The aircraft's bathrooms were notably small and became increasingly untidy during the flight. Despite these issues and arriving 33 minutes late in Sydney due to technical delays at departure, Frame concluded positively about his experience: "I would happily fly Jetstar’s A321NEO again, as long as I can get the exit row!"
