Major airline caterer Gate Gourmet is scheduled to face a worker strike starting July 30. Unless there is a last-minute breakthrough in negotiations, the strike will proceed as planned.

July has already been challenging for air travel with CrowdStrike issues and the ensuing Delta Air Lines meltdown. The situation is expected to worsen next week.

While Gate Gourmet is not the only caterer, other companies are unlikely to compensate for the shortfall. Airlines are preparing for limited or no meal service and reduced beverage service.

Japan Airlines anticipates offering box meals only in all classes of service out of both Boston and Dallas. Even first-class passengers on the 13-hour Dallas Fort Worth – Tokyo Haneda flight will receive cold box meals, according to Demetrius M.

In business class, passengers may experience a service similar to that on American Airlines regional jets, which have not returned to pre-pandemic meal standards.

When British Airways flight attendants went on strike in 2010, the airline employed replacement workers who provided cold catering even in first class long haul. This approach minimized training time and workload for cabin crew.

At that time, American AAdvantage awards on British Airways flights earned miles, and customer service offered 18,000 miles as an apology.

Gate Gourmet was originally Swiss Air catering. It is now owned by Singapore’s state investment fund and Singaporean private equity after being acquired from China’s HNA Group in 2019.
