One year ago, a comparison of the passenger experience aboard Air Canada’s Embraer E175s and its new Airbus A220s revealed that the 20-year-old E175 was still performing well. This year, however, on a similar New York-Montreal summer trip, it became evident that Air Canada’s regional jet cabins are beginning to show their age.

A delay to an inbound 737 flight to New York LaGuardia led to a switch to an earlier E175 flight. The same E175 as last year was assigned for the journey. Despite plans announced by Air Canada to refurbish its regional jet fleet, significant upgrades have yet to be implemented. Over the past year, the seats have become noticeably more worn.

The E175 offers ample seat width but suffers from worn-out cushions that compromise comfort. The Thales inflight entertainment system provided content and USB-A charging ports, but the Intelsat (formerly Gogo) air-to-ground Wi-Fi system failed again.

The return flight from Montreal was operated by a Jazz CRJ900, which has less overhead bin capacity than the E175. Boarding was stressful due to insufficient bin space, despite efforts by gate agents.

Air Canada’s CRJ900 fleet currently includes three distinct versions: the legacy Air Canada Express interior, an updated version with Atmosphere interior, and aircraft recently acquired from Delta Air Lines. The legacy interior aircraft featured non-functional seatback entertainment systems and disabled USB charging ports due to inoperative IFE. The Wi-Fi system also performed poorly.

"At least it was a quick flight," noted one passenger about the non-functioning Wi-Fi system during these short journeys.

During this busy summer season, Air Canada introduced free snacks, beer, and wine on Canadian and transborder flights until at least the end of 2024. "I was impressed to see that Air Canada stocked four types of beer on such a short regional flight," remarked another traveler.

Overall, while Air Canada's regional jet experience remains competitive compared to American counterparts, there is recognition that its legacy interiors might have overstayed their welcome. The forthcoming refurbishment program aims to address these issues but will see the removal of seatback screens.
