When you have elite status with a hotel chain, one of the most valued benefits is the potential for an upgrade. This could range from a better view, which is significant at beach resorts, to a suite where guests can enjoy more space or accommodate family members.

Upgrades provide additional value and comfort that might otherwise be unaffordable. However, obtaining these upgrades can be challenging due to factors such as high occupancy rates, numerous elite members at the property, and independently-owned hotels not adhering strictly to chain policies.

Many members assume that upgrades happen automatically. Hotels may review arrivals and allocate top-tier rooms to elite members. Yet this is not always guaranteed. Guests often hesitate to request upgrades out of fear of seeming undeserving or facing uncooperative check-in agents. Consequently, they accept their assigned rooms without further inquiry.

To increase the likelihood of receiving an upgrade, guests can take proactive steps such as contacting the hotel in advance or expressing dissatisfaction with their assigned room upon arrival. In some locations like Las Vegas, offering cash to the check-in clerk may also be effective.

The simplest strategy remains asking about available upgrades directly during check-in. Assuming an upgrade has been granted or believing the best possible room has been allocated without confirmation can lead to missed opportunities.

A note from the General Manager of an IHG hotel property highlights this point: "You are entitled to a complimentary upgrade based on availability and request. If our valued members do not request an upgrade at check-in, we assume they are happy with the choice they have made for their rooming needs at the time of booking." This policy indicates that requests must be made explicitly at check-in for consideration.

Some guests even research room availability prior to arrival by checking inventory online. If a room is listed for sale, it suggests availability unless it hasn't been cleaned yet—an aspect worth considering if waiting is acceptable.

Simply asking if any upgrades are available or requesting specific elite status considerations can make a difference. Providing reasons such as looking forward to relaxing in a spacious room with a view might also enhance comfort in making the request. Ultimately, asking costs nothing; the worst response would be a refusal.
