UNI Global Union has expressed growing concern over the situation in Bangladesh. The organization is maintaining contact with its affiliates, prioritizing the safety and wellbeing of workers and their families.

“We condemn the brutal response of the previous Government to the legitimate calls of the people for change,” stated Rajendra Acharya, UNI Global Union Regional Secretary for Asia and Pacific. “We expect those responsible for the violence and deaths of many hundreds of demonstrators to be held accountable for their actions. There must be full and independent investigations into the killings, with justice for the bereaved families.”

The union emphasized that peaceful demonstrators' protection and safety must be ensured, with full respect for civil liberties in line with international human rights and labor standards obligations.

“Employers must fulfill their responsibilities to their workers. Salaries must be paid, and the health and safety of workers, including practical issues of traveling to and from places of work, safeguarded,” commented Alke Boessiger, UNI Global Union’s Deputy General Secretary. “This is an extremely worrying time, but there is hope for a future Bangladesh where workers' rights are protected and trade unions respected. We will continue to provide support and solidarity to our affiliates and will work with them in their efforts to build a peaceful, democratic, and better future for Bangladesh.”

UNI Global Union urged those forming a new government in Bangladesh to actively engage with trade unions as their voice is crucial in the reform process needed.
