Amazon Air Hub workers connect packages to delivery stations across the world | About Amazon

Amazon has announced the release of its annual Sustainability Report, stating that it achieved 100% renewable energy usage across global operations last year, seven years ahead of schedule. The company aims to meet its commitment to The Climate Pledge through various sustainability initiatives.

According to the NKY Business Journal, the Amazon Air Hub is a $1.5 billion investment that opened in 2021. The Amazon Air Hub partnered with Duke Energy to enhance its sustainability efforts by installing Kentucky's largest utility-scale rooftop solar array. This project features over 5,600 photovoltaic panels on the Air Hub's 800,000-square-foot rooftop, generating up to 2 megawatts of solar power. This energy is fed directly into the electric distribution grid, providing clean electricity to approximately 400 homes and businesses in Northern Kentucky.

"This project is one of five renewable energy projects in Kentucky that are helping Amazon power our operations with renewable energy while simultaneously generating positive benefits for the local communities we work with," said Amazon Air Hub Head of Operations Jess Stewart of the collaboration, according to the NKY Business Journal. "In our efforts to reach net zero, Amazon is committed to matching the electricity used by our operations with renewable energy and enabling carbon-free energy projects around the world – that’s why we continue to support a growing number of renewable energy projects in Kentucky," Stewart added.

Amazon's 2023 Sustainability Report outlines various sustainability efforts, including replacing 95% of plastic air pillows in North American packaging with paper filler, aiming for full removal by the end of the year. The company also invested in 26 emerging climate start-ups and launched the Amazon Sustainability Exchange to provide suppliers with resources to adopt sustainable practices. In 2023, Amazon reported a 3% reduction in its overall carbon footprint. According to a press release by Amazon, it has also deployed over 24,000 electric vehicles in its transportation and delivery fleet worldwide as part of its decarbonization efforts.
