Celebrating its 18th anniversary, India's largest airline, IndiGo, has announced the launch of its first premium product and a frequent flier program. Traditionally a no-frills operator, IndiGo is now shifting towards a hybrid business model.

IndiGo commenced operations on August 4, 2006. Over the past decade, India's aviation sector has seen the collapse of several carriers. However, IndiGo has managed to thrive in this competitive environment and now holds a dominant position in the market.

With a fleet exceeding 300 aircraft and over 950 more on order, primarily from the Airbus A320 family, IndiGo maintains a domestic market share consistently above 60%. The airline recently reported its sixth consecutive quarter of profits and remains the only profitable carrier in India.

In an effort to capture more of the premium business travel market, IndiGo has introduced ‘IndiGoStretch,’ featuring Recaro Aircraft Seating’s R5 recliners in a 12-seat cabin on 45 new A321neo aircraft. The airline will continue to offer XL extra legroom seats and standard economy class with Recaro’s R2 slimline seats. The new service will debut on popular routes such as Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad starting in November. Initial prices are set at Rs.18018 ($240) for the Mumbai-Delhi route.

Additionally, IndiGo is testing a wireless stream-to-device inflight entertainment system to compete with Air India and Vistara. The new premium seats include features like curated vegetarian meal boxes, priority check-in, anytime boarding, in-seat power options including USB-C ports, device holders, and privacy wings.

As part of its celebrations, IndiGo also launched BluChip, its frequent flier program based on spending rather than distance traveled. Key features include non-expiring miles as long as membership is active and redemption tickets available up to the last seat on each flight. Members earn more points when booking directly with the airline and can qualify for membership tiers immediately.

IndiGo expects delivery of A321XLR aircraft next year with an order for 69 units. Additionally, it has ordered 30 Airbus A350-900 widebodies scheduled for delivery from 2027 onwards to expand its international network.

For Indian passengers seeking premium experiences amidst industry consolidation into one full-service carrier under Air India/Vistara's merger by year-end, these developments by IndiGo are significant additions to the market.
