American Airlines has announced that it will now award miles and status credit when customers purchase a cabin upgrade. This change addresses the increasing difficulty of securing complimentary upgrades due to fuller planes and more passengers holding elite status.

Previously, American Airlines' ConciergeKey members faced challenges with upgrades despite being at the top of the list. Deadheading pilots had priority, and there were limited first-class seats available on certain aircraft like the Airbus A319, A320, and Boeing 787. Additionally, domestic upgrades could be purchased for as little as $40, making them more accessible to coach passengers.

The downside was that these paid upgrades did not earn miles or credit towards status because no ticket number was generated for the purchase. To address this issue, American Airlines had to invest in IT systems to track these purchases and award miles accordingly.

In January 2024, American Airlines promised changes in this regard, which have now been implemented. The AAdvantage program will award miles and loyalty points at the same rate as purchased tickets for cabin buy-up offers. For instance, a paid first-class upgrade earns five AAdvantage miles per dollar spent, plus status bonuses up to 11 miles per dollar. This is in addition to any miles earned through credit card payments.

This development makes buy-up offers more attractive for passengers aiming for elite status or looking for better deals on first-class seats. If cheaper buy-ups are offered frequently by American Airlines, it indicates an abundance of unsold premium seats.

For those focused on achieving elite status or avoiding coach travel without paying full price upfront, one strategy is to book a coach ticket and wait for discounted upgrade offers. If such an offer is not received, passengers can cancel their flight and use the credit towards purchasing a first-class seat directly.

Additionally, American Airlines mentioned plans in January to introduce mileage redemption for access to Flagship First Class lounges in Miami and Dallas-Fort Worth. While this has not yet been implemented, progress on awarding miles for cabin upgrades suggests other announcements may follow soon.
