Josh Lewandowski, Site Leader for Amazon Air at Chicago-Rockford International Airport, stated that Amazon Air is implementing proactive safety measures to protect its workforce from the heat during the summer months. Lewandowski gave his statement to Sky Industry News on August 13.

"Ensuring our team stays cool in the summer is a top priority," said Lewandowski, Site Leader for Amazon Air at Chicago-Rockford (KRFD). "We've implemented a comprehensive approach, including state-of-the-art cooling technologies, frequent wellness checks, and proactive measures to make sure our employees can perform at their best while staying safe and comfortable. Our commitment is not just meeting safety standards but exceeding them."

According to WREX local NBC news, Amazon employees have access to cooling vans and hydration stations on site. Employees also have cooling gear, such as sunglasses, gloves, and vests. "From cooling hats, sleeves, and vests to special sunglasses and hydration stations equipped with electrolyte packages, we provide every possible tool to mitigate the effects of heat stress," Lewandowski told local NBC news. Despite the airport's growth and demanding operations, Lewandowski said safety remains the top priority, ensuring both efficiency and the well-being of employees.

The company employs over 9,000 safety professionals globally who implement Heat Illness Prevention Plans (HIPP) at each site. These plans include advanced weather forecasting, temperature monitoring, and specific protocols like cooling systems, hydration reminders, and adjusted work schedules. Manager and employee training ensure early detection and prevention of heat-related illnesses. Amazon's commitment to safety is integral to its operations.

Amazon's global recordable incident rate (RIR) has improved 30% over the past four years and 8% since 2022, including work-related injuries that required more than basic first-aid treatment, according to About Amazon.
