American Airlines has announced its annual fundraiser for Stand Up To Cancer, now in its fifth year. The airline is offering bonus miles for donations to cancer research.

Donations of $25 or more will earn 25 miles per dollar, but this increases to 50 miles per dollar if paid with an American Airlines U.S.-issued co-brand Mastercard, up to a maximum of $10,000 in donations. However, the miles earned do not count as Loyalty Points and thus do not contribute towards achieving status levels within the AAdvantage program.

Regarding the effectiveness of Stand Up To Cancer as a charity, it is noted that they primarily make grants to researchers. The organization operates under the Entertainment Industry Foundation, a 501(c)(3) public charity. In 2022, significant grants included $13.2 million to the American Association for Cancer Research and over $1 million each to institutions such as Mass General Hospital and Princeton University.

Potential donors should be aware that contributions through this offer may not be fully tax-deductible due to the value received from the bonus miles. According to the fine print: "For charitable deduction purposes, each mile is valued at 3 cents per mile."

The promotion ends on September 30th or when $3 million has been donated. There have been complications with similar promotions in the past when caps were reached without timely notification.

If members donate up to the cap of $3 million, between 75 and 150 million miles could be awarded. The cost implications for American Airlines include booking travel liability at around one cent per mile and internal costs estimated at around 0.75 cents per mile.

In addition to earning bonus miles through donations, American Airlines will also launch limited-edition amenity kits designed by Raven + Lily. These kits will feature Stand Up To Cancer colors and a QR code for additional donations but details regarding their availability are yet to be announced.

For those interested in supporting cancer research while earning frequent flyer miles—albeit likely without tax deductions—this offer presents an opportunity.
