Former NFL offensive lineman Gosder Cherilus was arrested Sunday morning after Delta Air Lines flight 154 from Boston to Dublin returned to its origin. The 40-year-old ex-professional athlete reportedly urinated on a fellow passenger.

The flight, already delayed by four hours, experienced further disruption an hour into its journey when Cherilus, who appeared intoxicated, escalated an earlier altercation over seating arrangements. Around 1 a.m., he allegedly approached an elderly female passenger, exposed himself, and urinated on her for approximately 20 seconds. Flight attendants attempted to intervene but reported that Cherilus became aggressive and struck an elderly man before collapsing into another seat.

The pilot decided to turn the plane back, landing at Logan Airport around 2 a.m. State Police and U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers boarded the plane upon arrival. Due to his size and uncooperative behavior, officers used two sets of handcuffs to detain the 6-foot-6-inch, 280-pound man.

Cherilus was charged with disorderly conduct, interfering with the operation of an aircraft, and resisting arrest. He was arraigned in East Boston District Court today, where he pleaded not guilty to all charges and was released on $2,500 bail. Despite his plea, he issued an apology for his behavior.

In his statement, Cherilus attributed his actions to sleep deprivation and a sleeping medication he had taken for the first time. He claimed that his behavior was "not representative of his character."

Delta apologized for the delay caused by CrowdStrike issues and rebooked passengers to Dublin for the following night.

Cherilus was originally drafted by the Detroit Lions as the 17th overall pick in 2008. He played for the Lions, Indianapolis Colts, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers during his career, starting in 116 out of 132 games before retiring in 2016 after earning more than $40 million.
