Boeing has revised its 20-year demand forecast for commercial jets, now predicting that airlines will require 43,975 new airplanes over the next two decades. This updated projection, released ahead of the Farnborough Airshow, marks an increase of 1,375 aircraft from its previous forecast. The U.S. airframer attributes this adjustment to the faster-than-expected recovery of air travel following the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to Boeing’s 2024 commercial market outlook (CMO), air traffic growth is reconnecting with pre-pandemic trends and is expected to rise by an average of 4.7% annually over the next twenty years.

Airbus, Boeing’s main competitor, has also revised its industry-wide delivery forecast upward. Airbus now projects a need for 42,430 new passenger and freighter deliveries between 2024 and 2043, compared to the 40,850 airplanes anticipated in its global market forecast last year.

“This is a challenging and inspiring era for aviation. The return to more typical traffic growth shows how resilient our industry is, even as we all work through ongoing supply chain and production constraints amid other global challenges," said Brad McMullen, Boeing's senior vice president of commercial sales and marketing.

The Boeing CMO forecasts that the global passenger and freighter fleet will nearly double over the next twenty years to reach 50,170 planes. Of these new deliveries, 47% (20,565 jets) will replace older aircraft with more fuel-efficient models aimed at improving sustainability. The remaining 53% (23,410 jets) will support fleet growth.

Single-aisle airplanes are projected to account for 71% of the fleet in 2043 and will constitute 76% of new deliveries (33,380 jets) over the next two decades. Widebody aircraft will make up 17% of deliveries (8,065 units), regional jets will account for 4% (1,525 units), and freighters will represent 2% (1,005 units).

Boeing estimates that world air cargo market demand will exceed 2,800 freighters by 2043. The forecast includes calls for approximately 1,250 standard-body freighters (less than forty tonnes), around 785 medium widebodies (forty to eighty tonnes), and about 810 large widebodies with cargo capacities exceeding eighty tonnes. Passenger-to-freighter conversions are expected to boost the cargo fleet by an additional 1,795 aircraft during this period.

By region, Eurasia and Asia Pacific are projected to lead all markets with each accounting for 22% of total airplane deliveries. North America follows closely with 21%, while China is expected to take delivery of 20%. The Middle East is anticipated to receive 7% of all new aircraft between 2024 and 2043.
