When a flight is canceled and passengers are stranded overnight, airlines might provide hotel accommodations. This often depends on whether the delay is deemed within the airline's control, such as mechanical issues or crew shortages, or due to uncontrollable factors like weather or air traffic control problems.

In some cases, even when airlines offer hotel rooms, availability can be limited. The quality of these accommodations may also be subpar, and passengers may not always receive individual rooms.

Recently, easyJet required unrelated passengers to share hotel rooms. One woman reported being told she would have to sleep in the hotel lobby if she did not agree to share a room with a man she had never met. "Luckily the double bed could be separated into two," she said. "Once finally in bed at 4:30 am I cried quietly out of frustration. Although exhausted I did not sleep as I felt scared (the man was very nice but I was sleeping with a stranger in a small room). The morning was awkward and uncomfortable."

Other airlines have faced similar criticisms. Air Canada once sent an unrelated man and woman to share a room. American Airlines made three passengers share one room, with one person having to sleep on the floor. A Chinese airline previously housed passengers in an S&M-themed hotel.

The Biden administration has pressured airlines to cover hotels and meals during long delays that are their fault; however, there has been no emphasis on the quality of these accommodations or the amount of food covered.

Passengers might consider taking matters into their own hands by using credit card trip delay coverage to book their own rooms and save receipts for reimbursement. This approach ensures they stay at properties where they feel comfortable without waiting for airline arrangements.

Alternatively, travelers can request distressed passenger rates at airport baggage offices or use reward points for better accommodations quickly.

While airlines may offer free rooms during controllable overnight delays, these options often come with significant drawbacks. It may be more beneficial for travelers to arrange their own lodging rather than relying on what the airline provides.
