Delta Air Lines has issued a memo to prospective flight attendant applicants outlining specific appearance requirements for interviews. The document, titled "Appearance Requirements Acknowledgment," emphasizes the importance of wearing “proper undergarments” and ensuring that underwear is not visible to staff.

The memo details various expectations for candidates, including prohibitions on profanity and gum chewing. It also specifies that fingernails must be clean, neat, and trimmed, with interview clothing being professional and appropriately fitted. Skirts should not be excessively short.

“The customer service experience begins the moment a Flight Attendant puts on their uniform,” the memo states. “The Delta uniform represents always putting safety first, pride in the Delta culture and demonstrates a genuine graciousness that will be remembered by our customers.”

To ensure commitment to Delta’s brand and customer service standards, updated appearance requirements have been established for the interview process. These include guidelines such as nails being painted in a single color without neon or glitter, aftershave and perfume applied lightly, and restrictions on stark hair highlights or unnatural shades.

Unlike many U.S. carriers that maintain uniform standards but may not strictly enforce them, Delta places significant importance on the appearance of its frontline employees. The airline invests in distinctive uniforms designed to project a professional image.

This focus on appearance contrasts with some international practices. For instance, British Airways recently required cabin crew to wear see-through blouses, while Pakistan International Airlines introduced an underwear requirement for flight attendants two years ago. In some conservative Muslim countries like Malaysia, airlines have imposed extreme measures during interviews.

In the U.S., corporate uniform standards can sometimes clash with more relaxed dress codes in other sectors. However, when interviewing for a job at Delta Air Lines or similar companies, it is advisable to adhere strictly to dress codes and present oneself professionally.
