dnata, a prominent air and travel services provider, has announced the addition of 14 new electric ground power units (GPUs) to its fleet at Dubai International Airport. This initiative is expected to handle 33% of GPU utilization at the airport, replacing diesel-powered equipment and reducing fuel consumption by approximately 550,000 liters annually.

The first four electric GPUs have already been deployed in support of Emirates Engineering's services. The remaining units are anticipated to arrive in November. This investment, amounting to $4 million, aligns with dnata's strategy to enhance environmental efficiency by transitioning from diesel-powered engines to hybrid, electric, or hydrogen alternatives where infrastructure allows.

Jaffar Dawood, Senior Vice President of Airport Operations - UAE and MEA at dnata, stated: “Our latest fleet investment underlines our ongoing commitment to using electric equipment wherever the airport’s infrastructure permits. It reflects our focus on environmental responsibility and aligns with both customer expectations and the airport’s sustainability efforts. In addition, it improves operational efficiency and reduces maintenance needs."

dnata has also shifted its non-electric fleet to biodiesel at Dubai airports as part of its efforts to reduce emissions. The company aims for a 50% reduction in carbon emissions by 2030 through industry collaboration and infrastructure improvements.

In the financial year 2023-24, dnata reported significant reductions in carbon intensity across its operations—over 8%, 22%, and 26% in airport operations, travel, and catering businesses respectively—validated by Verifavia.

The company continues investing in renewable energy solutions globally. For instance, it procures solar and wind energy exclusively in markets like the UK and Ireland. Solar panels have been installed in facilities across Pakistan and the Philippines.

Additionally, dnata monitors fuel consumption using Vehicle Tracking Management Systems (VTMS) while promoting responsible driver behavior through education and training.

In September 2023, dnata received IATA’s environmental management certification for its commitment to sustainability across its diverse portfolio in the UAE.
