Air New Zealand has launched a new promotion called the Sweetstake, offering a chance for participants to win a share of one million Airpoints Dollars (APD). The competition involves guessing the number of lollies in a giant jar that will tour 11 locations across New Zealand, from Whangārei to Invercargill.

Scott Carr, Air New Zealand's General Manager Domestic, highlighted the cultural significance of the airline's lollies. "Our humble hard-boiled lolly has sparked many important discussions in its time. What's the best flavour? What's the acceptable number of lollies to take? Do you suck yours or chew it?" he said. Carr also introduced another question for Kiwis: "How many lollies are in the Air New Zealand lolly jar?"

Participants can submit their guesses online daily, with the closest guess winning a grand prize of 50,000 APD. Those unable to visit the jar physically can engage through an augmented reality version available online. "If you're using your mobile device you can 'drop' the giant lolly jar into your backyard to get a sense of how big it actually is," Carr added.

The jar stands over 4.5 meters tall and was filled with lollies counted manually by an external team. In addition to the grand prize, there are several other prizes available, including daily online prizes of 10,000 APD and spot prizes worth 500 APD.

"The best thing about Airpoints Dollars is they can be spent on so many different things," noted Carr. This includes domestic flights, overseas holidays, Koru memberships, rental cars, or items from the Airpoints store.

The Sweetstake runs from October 1 to October 20 and is open to all New Zealand-based Airpoints members. Membership is free and can be obtained by signing up at airpoints.co.nz. Participants must be logged into their accounts to enter and can submit one guess per day both in-person and online during the competition period.

If multiple participants guess correctly or come closest to the actual number of lollies, they will share the grand prize equally. Winners of spot prizes receive instant notifications with APD credited within 24 hours. The winner of the grand prize will be contacted after October 21.

This initiative underscores Air New Zealand's commitment to engaging with its customers through creative promotions while celebrating a beloved aspect of its brand heritage—its iconic hard-boiled sweets enjoyed by millions each year.
