Labor strikes at hotels in major U.S. cities continue with no resolution in sight, as more than 5,000 workers remain on strike. The affected hotels are affiliated with major brands such as Marriott, Hyatt, Hilton, and Omni in Boston, Honolulu, San Francisco, and Seattle. Unlike earlier shorter protests, the current strikes are indefinite.

Unite Here chapters across the country represent hotel workers including housekeepers and front desk agents who are negotiating for higher wages and better working conditions. Many labor contracts expired on August 31.

In Boston, nearly 700 additional workers joined the strike at the Omni Boston Hotel at the Seaport this week. While most strikes are indefinite, a weeklong strike at two Hilton-affiliated hotels in Seattle is expected to end soon.

Gwen Mills, international president of Unite Here stated: "Hotel workers are tired of working long hours while barely getting by. Hotel workers keep walking out on strike because hotel corporations like Hilton can afford to raise wages." She added that "strikes will continue in the hotel industry until Hilton, Hyatt, and Marriott show they respect our work by settling contracts that help our members recover too."

Spokespeople for major hotel brands have indicated contingency plans to minimize disruptions during strikes. However, Unite Here warns guests of possible service suspensions due to limited staffing.

Despite ongoing tensions, some progress has been made; workers at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront ratified a new labor deal after nearly 40 days of striking.
