Cathay Pacific has expressed support for the Hong Kong SAR Government's new initiatives aimed at bolstering Hong Kong's status as a leading international aviation hub. These measures, outlined in the Chief Executive’s 2024 Policy Address, include the commissioning of a Three-Runway System and plans to more than double the scale of Airport City.

Ronald Lam, Cathay Group Chief Executive Officer, stated: “Hong Kong International Airport is one of the world's busiest airports for international travel and the world's busiest cargo gateway. The Three-Runway System is poised to open up many exciting opportunities, including tens of millions of additional passengers and millions of additional tonnes of cargo each year.”

The expansion of Airport City is expected to enhance tourism and retail prospects in Hong Kong. Cathay supports these efforts as they aim to strengthen air connectivity with Mainland China and improve cooperation with civil aviation authorities from Belt and Road countries. This initiative also seeks to develop visitor sources from regions such as the Middle East and ASEAN countries.

Lam commented on Cathay's commitment: “As Hong Kong’s home airline, we are eagerly looking forward to the new era of our international aviation hub that will take Hong Kong to new heights. We are a committed enabler of Hong Kong’s future through the connectivity we provide.”

Cathay anticipates further developments in mega-event tourism economy support and arts and culture scene reinforcement through collaborations like those with West Kowloon Cultural District Authority. The company also looks forward to improved intermodal connectivity between Hong Kong and Greater Bay Area locations.

On cargo operations, Lam noted: “Cathay is the largest cargo operator in the busiest cargo airport in the world.” He emphasized support for government initiatives enhancing HKIA Dongguan Logistics Park processing capacity.

Additionally, Cathay backs government moves towards sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) development and talent attraction schemes related to developing Hong Kong's "eight centres."

Lam concluded positively about these policy directions: “Cathay is greatly encouraged by the promising initiatives outlined in the 2024 Policy Address.”
