Federal Express Corporation (FedEx) has announced plans to upgrade its Shanghai International Express and Cargo Hub at Pudong International Airport into an intercontinental transit hub. This announcement was made during the opening ceremony of the 2024 North Bund Forum in Shanghai. Poh-Yian Koh, Senior Vice President of FedEx and President of FedEx China, participated in the unveiling of this initiative alongside local government officials.

The 2024 North Bund Forum, co-hosted by China's Ministry of Transport and the Shanghai Municipal People's Government, is focused on exploring trends in global shipping and aviation under the theme "Digital, Smart, and Green: Co-Creating a New Ecosystem of Global Shipping and Aviation." The forum aims to foster international exchanges and cooperation while supporting sustainable development in China's transportation sector.

A major highlight from the forum is FedEx's plan to enhance its operations in China through this hub upgrade. This move will expand connections between Shanghai and China's second- and third-tier cities, enhancing FedEx's network reach. It is expected to improve connectivity between China and global markets through FedEx's reliable network, supporting local businesses' growth with unique service offerings. The upgraded facility will contribute to establishing Shanghai as a comprehensive international aviation gateway and a leading global air cargo hub.

Shanghai holds strategic importance for FedEx due to its role as a vital center for China's foreign trade and economic activity. Since establishing its China headquarters in Shanghai in 2004, FedEx has maintained a strong presence in the city. The existing hub at Pudong International Airport opened in 2018 as a critical facility for FedEx's Asia-Pacific operations. Earlier this year, FedEx inaugurated its new China headquarters in Shanghai, reinforcing its commitment to connecting China with global markets.
