The Republican National Convention, scheduled to take place this week in Milwaukee, is expected to cause disruptions in air traffic across the region. With approximately 50,000 attendees anticipated for the four-day event in southwestern Wisconsin, NBAA Air Traffic Services has indicated that Chicago Center is seeking cooperation from aircraft operators regarding departure restrictions from Chicago O’Hare International (KORD) and Chicago Midway International (KMDW) airports.
Northbound departing aircraft are encouraged to utilize coded departure routes either eastbound or westbound during specified times to avoid potential delays caused by convention activities near Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport (KMKE). These specific timeframes include from 17:30 UTC on July 16 through 04:00 on July 17; from 18:00 UTC on July 17 through 04:00 UTC on July 18; and from 18:00 UTC on July 18 through 04:00 on July 19.
Due to an expected increase in departure demand stemming from the event at both Waukesha County Airport (KUES) and KMKE, Chicago Center has issued a mandate requiring all aircraft departing these airports to file particular flight routes on July 18 and 19. For departures from KUES, eastbound flights should follow GAYLE..SLLAP before continuing with their user-preferred trajectory (UPT), while southbound flights should use ACCRA5 followed by UPT. Normal routing applies for other directions.
