Bombardier has completed the installation of over 3,000 solar panels at its London Biggin Hill Service Centre. This initiative is expected to supply up to 32% of the facility's energy needs. The Canadian aircraft manufacturer collaborated with Zestec Renewable Energy for this project, which is anticipated to generate more than 1.133 million kWh and reduce carbon emissions by up to 252 tons.

The service center, covering nearly 250,000 square feet, provides maintenance and modifications for Bombardier Learjets, Challengers, and Globals.

Paul Sislian, executive vice president of aftermarket service and strategy at Bombardier, stated: “At Bombardier, we are actively committed to ensuring that we are making aviation more sustainable, and this includes the design and implementation of sustainability-related projects in our service facilities around the world.” He added that the installation aligns with Bombardier's goal to minimize environmental impact in manufacturing and servicing aircraft.

This solar panel project is part of several sustainability initiatives by Bombardier. The company highlighted its new LEED Silver-certified facility at Seletar Aerospace Park in Singapore as another example. This facility also features solar panels, electric vehicle charging stations, and sustainable aviation fuel capability.

Bombardier aims for a 25% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2025 compared to 2019 levels. Other measures include using SAF book-and-claim methods and publishing Environmental Product Declarations for its current aircraft models. Additionally, Bombardier is engaged in the EcoJet research project focusing on blended-wing-body designs.
