The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has validated GKN Aerospace's plans to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. This decision was announced at the Farnborough Airshow 2024. SBTi, an organization that assists businesses in setting emission reduction targets based on climate science and the Paris Agreement, has confirmed that GKN's near-term goal for reducing emissions by 2025 aligns with efforts to limit global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.

"SBTi has determined that our Scope 1 and 2 near-term target ambition is in line with a 1.5°C trajectory, while the Scope 1, 2, and 3 long-term target ambition has been recognized to be aligned with the SBTi’s 1.5°C migration pathways for reaching net zero by 2050 or sooner,” stated GKN officials.

GKN Aerospace, a UK-based group, aims to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across its value chain by mid-century. The company plans to cut absolute Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by half from their levels in 2020 by the year 2030 and reduce Scope 3 emissions by a quarter from their levels in 2022 within the same timeframe. Additionally, GKN intends for 70% of its suppliers to set science-based targets by the year 2028.

"Our science-based targets provide a clear pathway to net zero. By addressing our entire value chain, we emphasize our commitment to being the most trusted and sustainable partner in the sky," said Peter Dilnot, CEO of GKN Aerospace. "Achieving validation from the SBTi marks a significant milestone, underscoring our dedication to decarbonization and accelerating the transition to a more sustainable aerospace industry."

SBTi is a collaborative effort among several organizations including the United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute, and World Wildlife Fund for Nature. Its mission is to aid companies globally in halving their emissions before the end of this decade and achieving net-zero status before mid-century. The initiative defines best practices in setting science-based targets and provides resources as well as guidance for companies looking to adopt these practices.
