Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport (MKE) is reintroducing its winter coat check service as part of its efforts to promote travel to warmer destinations. This service, which began on Friday, allows passengers traveling to places like Miami, Austin, and Cancun to store their winter gear at the airport before heading off. The coat check is located at the presecurity Summerfest Marketplace shop in the main terminal.

The coat check service will be available until at least April 1. It provides a convenient option for travelers who want to avoid carrying bulky winter clothing to beach destinations. "Even if there's a [flight] delay," MKE assures that coat pickups are available until the final flight of each day. The cost is $2 per day with a maximum charge of $10 per trip.

Christie Green, MKE's marketing coordinator, noted that since the service started in 2020, about 500 coats have been checked each winter with only one unclaimed coat so far due to special circumstances.

While few international airports offer similar services, such as Germany's Frankfurt Airport (FRA), MKE remains unique in the U.S. At least five other airports have shown interest in adopting this program.

Besides the coat check, MKE offers several other amenities including Renaissance Books and the Mitchell Gallery of Flight museum. These facilities provide visitors with additional activities while waiting for flights.

As the holiday travel season approaches, MKE has also designated a "Recombobulation Area" where passengers can regroup after passing through security.
