American Airlines is adjusting its domestic flight network by cutting one route and adding four new ones. The Fort Worth-based airline plans to discontinue the 667-mile route between Chicago and Columbia, South Carolina, effective January 8, 2025. This decision comes after American has operated this route since July 2023 but struggled to fill its 50-seat regional jets.

Despite the cut, American will maintain service from Columbia to several other hubs, including Charlotte, Dallas, Miami, New York City, Philadelphia, and Washington D.C. With this change, United Airlines will become the sole carrier offering flights from Columbia to Chicago.

"As part of a continuous evaluation of our network, American has made the difficult decision to discontinue service between Columbia, SC (CAE) and Chicago (ORD). American will continue to offer service from CAE to five cities across the U.S.," stated an airline spokesperson.

On a positive note for travelers in other regions, American is introducing new routes starting with a year-round daily service from Los Angeles to Columbus, Ohio. This service begins on March 6, 2025. Spirit Airlines previously operated this route but plans to discontinue it early next year.

"American is excited to welcome customers on our new nonstop service between Columbus and Los Angeles," said Jordan Pack, American's director of domestic network planning. "Los Angeles joins a lineup of eleven other nonstop destinations from Columbus on American."

Additionally, three limited-time routes will be added from Boston Logan International Airport during February's peak spring break period. These include flights from Boston to Orlando and Fort Myers on select dates in February.

The airline is also preparing for increased demand around the Super Bowl in New Orleans next year by offering flights from Boston on February 6 and 7 with return flights on February 10.

These strategic changes reflect American's efforts to optimize its domestic capacity during varying demand periods.
