The first Airbus A330-900neo for Malaysia Airlines has completed its initial test flight at Airbus' Toulouse facility. This aircraft is the first of 20 ordered by the airline in 2022, marking a significant update to its fleet. The new planes are expected to support Malaysia Airlines' medium-term growth.

Malaysia Airlines has a longstanding relationship with the Airbus A330, having been one of the early operators of this model. The airline currently operates 24 A330s and plans to replace these with the new A330-900s. CEO Izham Ismail commented on recent delivery delays from Airbus: "The delay is not ideal, but it is not expected to impact our goal of having five in our fleet by the end of Q1 2025."

The new A330-900s will feature an upgraded configuration with 297 seats, including 28 business class 'signature suites' and 269 economy class seats. Business class will include fully flat beds and privacy doors, while economy class will offer enhanced in-flight entertainment options.

Initial routes for the A330-900s include Melbourne, Auckland, Tokyo, and Doha. The airline also plans to return to Brisbane in March 2025 as part of its expansion strategy.

Ismail noted that future growth could involve increasing flights to Australia and potentially adding more services to Auckland: “We need to grow Australia... I see a need to increase Sydney to three times a day, and likely Melbourne as well.”
