American Airlines is adjusting its winter schedule at London Heathrow, reducing flights from Los Angeles to the lowest level seen in recent winters and limiting Phoenix operations to summer months. The airline will also introduce a temporary route between Heathrow and Las Vegas for the Consumer Electronics Show. This shift results in an average of 19 daily departures from Heathrow this winter, down from the anticipated 21, aligning with last winter's levels.

The changes are attributed to several factors including reduced winter leisure demand, overcapacity on the London-Los Angeles route, high travel costs for Europeans visiting the US, and potential retrofitting of aircraft like the 777-300ERs. Despite these reductions, American remains the leading foreign long-haul operator at Heathrow. However, details about slot management remain undisclosed.

Los Angeles-Heathrow service will now offer one to two daily flights instead of two or three. This adjustment returns it to pre-pandemic winter levels. The reduction may allow aircraft redeployment to more profitable routes, potentially in the Southern Hemisphere.

Phoenix becomes a summer-only destination with British Airways providing the sole non-stop winter service using A350-1000 aircraft. While Arizona is popular among European tourists during winter, Americans tend to visit Europe in summer.

For a brief period coinciding with the Consumer Electronics Show, American will operate flights between Heathrow and Las Vegas, stepping in after Delta's previous market presence. Regular services by British Airways and Virgin Atlantic continue on this route, with Norse Atlantic starting Gatwick-Las Vegas flights in September.

In response to these adjustments, American Airlines stated: "As part of the continuous evaluation of our network, American will adjust service from London. Together with our partner British Airways, we will continue to operate service from more than 25 destinations across the United States to Heathrow. We’re proactively reaching out to impacted customers to offer alternate travel arrangements."

Below is a summary of American's planned schedule for various routes:

- Boston: Daily 777-200ER

- Charlotte: Triple daily 777-200ER

- Chicago O'Hare: Double daily 787-9

- Dallas/Fort Worth: Triple daily to four daily 777-300ER/777-200ER

- Las Vegas (for CES): Daily January 4-12 only via 777-200ER

- Los Angeles: Daily to double daily using 777 models

- Miami: Double daily via 777 models

- New York JFK: Triple daily expanding up to four using varied aircraft

- Philadelphia: Daily via 787-9

- Phoenix has no scheduled flights during this period.

These changes reflect ongoing evaluations and may be subject to further adjustments next winter season.
