Liebherr-Aerospace has officially opened a new production area in Lindenberg, Germany, just over a year after construction began. The facility will serve as a center of excellence for coating with an emphasis on sustainable surface treatment.

The new building features advanced heating technology that utilizes heat recovery with gas-operated heat pumps, already in use in other parts of the company. Additionally, a photovoltaic system has been installed on the grass-covered roof to enhance sustainability efforts.

A primary focus of the new facility is developing state-of-the-art coating processes using alternative materials and environmentally friendly methods. In aviation, meeting high safety standards poses challenges for material selection. Liebherr-Aerospace addresses this by employing high-velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF) spraying to replace traditional chrome-plating processes without compromising quality or safety. The extension is equipped with cutting-edge technology to expand HVOF process capacities, reducing transport routes within production and reinforcing expertise at the Lindenberg site.

Currently, Liebherr-Aerospace is unique in the aerospace industry for offering the HVOF process in series production for both exterior and interior components.

This expansion also increases demand for skilled employees at the German site. Martin Wandel, managing director and chief operating officer at Liebherr-Aerospace & Transportation SAS, stated: “We are very aware of our responsibility towards nature and the environment. Our center of excellence for coatings in Lindenberg takes us another step further in our efforts to establish more environmentally friendly production methods. Simultaneously, we are expanding our skilled workforce needed to continuously pursue our goals.”
