Safran Helicopter Engines and MTU Aero Engines have entered into a cooperation agreement to establish a joint venture named EURA, which stands for European Military Rotorcraft Engine Alliance. This 50/50 partnership aims to develop a new engine specifically for the next generation of European military helicopters.

The signing ceremony was held at the French Embassy in Berlin, attended by François Delattre, France’s Ambassador to Germany, and Thomas Hitschler from the German Federal Ministry of Defense. The agreement was signed by Cédric Goubet, CEO of Safran Helicopter Engines, and Michael Schreyögg, Chief Program Officer of MTU Aero Engines. EURA will be headquartered in Bordes, France, with its CEO chosen from MTU.

EURA's primary focus is on creating a heavy helicopter engine that will power military helicopters expected to be operational by 2040. The engine is designed to enhance efficiency while reducing costs and is aligned with the ENGRT project. It promises improved capabilities such as longer range and better maneuverability.

The formation of EURA may lead to future opportunities within the European Defence Fund for military helicopter engines. “EURA is a guarantee of sovereignty for the future military helicopters that Europe and European nations will need,” stated Cédric Goubet. He added that it would facilitate the development of technologies like hybrid-electric propulsion.

Michael Schreyögg commented on the strategic importance of this initiative: “This future-oriented program for a new 100% European engine marks another milestone in the continent’s defense history.” He emphasized efficient management and decision-making through EURA.

This agreement builds upon an MoU signed at the Paris Air Show in June 2023 and aligns with ongoing efforts to support projects like the New Generation Fighter within the FCAS program.
