Embraer announced the E2 aircraft family as the successor to its E-jets in June 2013. Since then, Azul and Porter Airlines have emerged as the largest operators of this aircraft family. However, Embraer has not yet delivered any E175-E2s due to scope clause regulations limiting their market.
The Brazilian manufacturer revealed plans to invest $1.7 billion in research, development, and capital expenditure for the new aircraft at the Paris Air Show on June 17, 2013. According to Embraer, "The application of advanced technologies for engines, wings and avionics on the E2s will provide airlines with maximum uncompromised gains in efficiency while maintaining commonality with the current generation of E-Jets."
Since delivering its first E2 jet to Widerøe in April 2018, Embraer has expanded its customer base globally. Among these customers are Air Astana, Air Peace, Azul, Binter Canarias, Helvetic Airways (operating for SWISS), KLM cityhopper (operated by KLM), Porter Airlines, Royal Jordanian, Scoot, TUI fly Belgium-based AOC), and Widerøe.
