Federal Express Corporation has released a study forecasting over 226 million parcel deliveries in the Netherlands between October and December 2024. This marks a 7.7% increase compared to the same period in 2023.

The research was conducted by Effigy Consulting, which analyzed its courier, express, and parcel market (CEP) database comprising 500,000 data points across more than 300 carriers in 41 countries. The findings indicate an increase of over 16 million parcels compared to last year's figures for the Netherlands.

This growth is largely driven by e-commerce, with an expected 73% (166 million) of shipments directed to consumers (B2C). The peak period encompassing Black Friday and the holiday season is crucial for both Dutch and European retailers. Approximately 30% of total European volume in 2023 was delivered during the last three months of the year, highlighting the importance of this 'golden quarter'. This figure is seven percentage points higher than the average for other quarters.

Business-to-business (B2B) shipments also rise during this peak period as stores restock and prepare for their busiest season. About 21.5% of logistics activities are anticipated as B2B shipments, while nearly a twentieth (3.7%) will be consumer-to-consumer (C2C), with gifts being sent across the country. The remaining percentage consists of consumer-to-business (C2B) shipments.

Marius Penninks, Vice President Network Operations at FedEx, stated: "The peak period is a crucial time for Dutch businesses who heavily rely on logistics services to meet growing demand. We see increasing demand leading up to the holidays again this year, with themed days like Cyber Monday and Black Friday gaining popularity in the Netherlands. Together with our customers, we are ready to handle increased workloads and ensure timely package arrivals so everyone can enjoy stress-free holidays."

To illustrate the scale of this peak period: Europe's total volume would fill Johan Cruijff ArenA approximately 45 times over; goods transported weigh nearly 7.5 million tons—around 15 kg per person within EU and UK populations.

Countries expecting highest delivery volumes include UK (1.3 billion), Germany (1.1 billion), followed by France at just over half-a-billion deliveries (524 million). On average there will be twelve packages per person across these regions during three months' span; Netherlands ranks eighth among surveyed nations.

Europe anticipates importing more goods than exporting during this timeframe—with nearly two hundred-million inbound parcels from places like China or USA against seventy-five-million outbound shipments—yet close-to-half-billion exported items still arise: almost five-hundred-million packages sent outwards intra- & extra-EU-wide respectively! A significant majority—86-point-five percent—of Dutch exports consist solely within EU-bound consignments alone according forecasted data showing seven-percent growth since last year's peaks too!

Penninks added: "This research further demonstrates that our country's role as exporter cannot be underestimated—it underscores importance having excellent intercontinental air-&-intra-European land networks available! At FedEx we leverage data flowing through physical infrastructures supporting companies throughout busy seasons ensuring each item scanned twenty-twenty-five times utilizing information monitoring interventions needed where necessary."
