A recent study by FedEx, the world's largest express transportation company, forecasts that parcel carriers will collectively distribute over 417 million shipments in Spain between October and December 2024. This marks a 10.8% increase compared to the same period in 2023, surpassing the European average growth rate of 9%.

The independent study was conducted by Effigy Consulting, which analyzed its database containing data on courier, express, and parcel services (CEP) with information from over 300 carriers across 41 countries.

Data indicates a significant rise in Spain's figures, moving from 376 million packages in 2023 to 417 million in 2024. Spain is expected to be the sixth most active European market for parcels during this peak season, spanning from Black Friday through the pre-Christmas period.

Daily deliveries during Black Friday in Spain (November 29) are projected to grow to 8.1 million this year, up from 6.9 million in 2023.

This growth has been driven by an increase in e-commerce, with nearly 70% of shipments (4.2 billion) expected to reach consumers directly within the European market.

Ian Silverton, Managing Director Ground Operations at FedEx, stated: “The peak season is a critical period for Spanish businesses as many rely on transport and logistics to meet increased demand and deliver to their customers. Online shopping, e-commerce, and the shift towards deferred services will continue during this year's peak season, reflecting changes in consumer behavior and ongoing cost awareness in the market. FedEx networks will expand and adapt to meet increased demand in Spain with air and ground transport options as well as more predictive technologies to manage potential disruptions and make the golden quarter a success.”

Across Europe, between October and December of 2024, there will be approximately 6.2 billion shipments—a rise of 9% compared to the same period in 2023 when there were about 5.7 billion packages.

To illustrate the scale of this peak season: if all packages sent were placed end-to-end they would cover about 1.15 million miles—enough distance to reach the moon and return twice. The total weight of goods transported across Europe during this time will be nearly 7.5 million tons—equivalent to around 15 kg per EU and UK inhabitant.

Countries with the highest delivery volumes during this peak season are expected to be the United Kingdom (1.3 billion), Germany (1.1 billion), followed by France (524 million), Turkey (476 million), Poland (456 million), and Spain (417 million), averaging about twelve packages delivered per person across the EU and UK over these three months.

Ian Silverton added: “During peak season FedEx along with other parcel delivery services will play a key role helping Spanish businesses maximize growth opportunities for expanding their operations. Spain is one of Europe's largest package delivery markets; our logistics sector is crucial not only for Spain’s social welfare but also economically besides being vital for retail success alongside e-commerce sectors."
